On the water departing Homer, 8/2/17

Finally out in the water again! We had a good breakfast at the place next to the hotel and then loaded all the gear into a taxi and went down to the launch. We picked up the kayaks and got everything loaded. Next was taking stuff to the post office to ship to Seward. Both kayaks are loaded as much as possible. And boy are they heavy.

Here’s where we launched from on the Homer Spit.

As you see, very overcast but beautiful and the water was perfect. We will camp near the point below and then round it tomorrow.

Here is Angela and I right before getting on the water.

With all the stuff we needed to do before launching it was eleven by the time we got paddles wet. Within five minutes we met a new friend.

We saw lots of sea otters and I paddled within ten feet of one in a kelp bed and never saw him. Angela was amazed as she was watching the entire encounter.

In the next hour we saw a humpback whale but he was too quick for me to get a picture and we also saw a bear on a beach about a quarter mile away. It was to far to get a picture.

Next stop was a little island for a great lunch.

Here are a few shots on the way to our camp beach.

We found a great beach to camp on for the night.

While we were eating dinner we saw nine river otters walk across the beach all in a line and head into the water. That was pretty neat. We had a great chilli mix for dinner. I can see that we might have a problem. I suspect I’ll gain a few pounds on this trip.

So, it was a pretty cloudy and dark day but great for paddling and no rain ?. Overall, it was a perfect first day for our Alaska adventure.

I’m lucky to be able to do this post since we are not far from Homer. Only about 13 miles. I’m pretty sure this will be the last post until the end of the trip.

Happy Paddling

Scott

  1. What an awesome experience. Have a great time. Hopefully some of your posts will squeak thru. Good luck, and safe paddling.

  2. When we were in Alaska about a month ago, the weather was overcast and had light rain off and on the whole time, except our last day. Hopefully, you’ll have good weather. I have looked at the cellular coverage in your neck of the woods, and indeed, there is nothing once you leave the Homer area until you get to the Seward area. We’ll have to be satisfied with Paddle Tracks.

  3. Hello Scott!

I enjoy reading your posts and seeing all the beautiful pictures. This is how we keep up with you :). Have fun! Be safe!

  4. It should only be another week or so and Scott should be getting back into cell coverage from Seward. Hopefully, he has been doing a daily journal that he’ll be able to upload when he is able. I know there are many of us waiting not so patiently to see his pictures and read of his experiences.

  5. Welcome back to the ‘civilized’ world! Paddle tracks shows you as being within cell service distance of Seward now (Thursday morning there). I’m sure you have a bunch of pictures and stories to tell, but for now a quick first reaction and maybe a favorite photo will do. The full story and photo album can wait for a good WiFi connection. Congratulations!
