March Tenth – Day Five

Ok, our first lifting of the anchor by hand. This is an all hands on deck evolution and we developed a pretty good routine. With that said, it was a lot of work.

We are motoring to our next location. The weather is beautiful and the scenery is astounding. Lots of picture taking is going on. We are headed to one of the most beautiful fjords in this region so we’re all very excited.

Nice to have no wind as we make our way to the next paddle location.

With 30 knot winds expected tonight we changed plans and went to a beautiful small bay where we could run lines to trees on each side. JF drove the dinghy and I had the job of scaling the slippery banks up to sturdy trees to run mooring lines around. Two on each side made the yacht secure for the high winds tonight.

After securing the yacht it was time to get into the kayaks and go check out the surroundings. WOW is about all I can say about it. We paddled out of our little bay and headed towards the glaciers at the head of the fjord we are in. Much of the paddle was ice free in general but we had a lot of tight bergy bits and growler ice to break our way through as well. Talking or writing about this area does not do justice. You have to look at the pictures to get an idea. Just amazing.

Yep, we paddled thru that ice.

Lunch stop on the beach

Just being “cool” :)
Steve, Jen, Bernie and Rebecca. Ice Paddlers all!
JF and Justine. What a great pair to paddle with. Actually, the entire team was great to be with!
Checking out the bigger “bunches”
Looking back out of this glacier fjord. We have to paddle back thru that to get to the yacht.

Our paddle this afternoon was one that can never be forgotten. And, to top it off, when we got back to the yacht we were able to tie up the kayaks on the beach instead of loading them back on the yacht. A nice thing after a great paddle.

Our views from the yacht at sunset.

We ended the day with a fantastic dinner and hit the bunks. Life is good!
