Whale Dance Paddle, 8/6

Another early start and the conditions were perfect. We crossed Chugach Bay and made a short beach stop in the next little bay before the big crossing of Windy and Rocky Bays. The weather was perfect so no wind and glass seas. We were well off shore so no rocks to play in either. As we made the crossing we saw whale signs just east of East Chugach Island. The next thing that happened was amazing. The whales started breaching all the way out of the water. These were big humpback whales. The big thud of the splash downs took almost a second to reach us. It was great to watch but they were too far to take pictures. The best thing was that this show went on for 45 minutes. Absolutely fantastic!!!

Here are a few shots from the days paddle.

We found a nice beach to land on for lunch.

And then it was back out on some really calm seas.

And of course you need to check the weather broadcasts anytime you are out far enough where the mountains won’t block the signal.

Our camp spot for the night was on the east side of Touglaalek Bay. The plan was to cross Port Dick and round Gore Point the next days so we wanted to get close.

I need to point out that the pictures do not do justice to the land/sea scape. Everything is huge in Alaska and the magnitude does not come through in the pictures. What looked to be a mile away was actually three to four miles away. This shot is looking back towards East Chugach and Elizabeth Islands.

That pass in the picture above is a two day paddle away.

We made it to the camp beach and got set up early. Dry suits dried out and tents set up.

With the tents set, Angela picked her kitchen spot, set a few big flat stones on the hollow log and went into the tent for a nap. I looked at the kitchen and decided another remodel was in order. Our Master Chef needed more flat counter space. I decided a nice long stone work surface was in order and proceeded to fill the log with small stones from the beach. This approach worked so good we did it several more times during the adventure. Here’s the kitchen.

See all the fresh veggies? One of the benefits of cold water paddling. We had fresh veggies for the entire 16 day adventure.

The view from this camp was as good as any.

Happy Paddling
